The first take on the kitchen computer was literally just a few parts tossed in the cupboard.

We didn't really have any cash to spend on this so getting the monitor (and getting it framed) and the wireless keyboard and mouse used up anything resembling a budget. It did however do the trick and added critical points to the WAF (which in turn led to budget increases and version 2.0).

The original parts list included (from memory which is a bit hazy now):
  • ASUS P2-99 ATX motherboard
(rested on a piece of plywood rested in turn on top of the other components)
  • Intel Celeron 233 MHz processor (Feel the power)
  • Gyration cordless desktop mouse and compact keyboard
This is by far the best wireless mouse / keyboard set there is.
The mouse can even be used in the air which is perfect for a kitchen.
The keyboard is tiny and can easily be tucked away in a drawer (where ours lives)
  • CueCat PS/2 barcode reader - This never really got used
  • Random speakers that we kept changing because they either were terrible or overpowering (A subwoofer in a cupboard is trouble - but under the stove was even worse)
  • Samsung SyncMaster 712N 17" LCD monitor
  • 3Com 3C905B network card (These used to be everywhere - now Vista didn't even ship with a driver for them...)
  • Some random power-supply, hard drive and CD ROM drive

For the keen-eyed reader, yes that is a Microsoft Cordless phone in the photos.
